Artists statement: 

Macsen Calvert is a British artist primarily working with drawing and print. Using a range of materials including woodblock, silkscreen, etching and digital. He works to create dark figurative artworks drawing on inspirations from western philosophy, especially psychoanalysis and German idealism. He also takes inspiration from expressionism and surrealism trying to create artworks that seem to hold some kind of contradiction and allow for the artwork to seem dynamic. Using a kind of symbolism to abstract from the empirical given world and create a kind of mythological vocabulary. Using crosshatching, block colour and shading to lend depth and contrast to these imagined scenes.
